GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay junior guard Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the fourth time during the 2013-14 season, the Horizon League office announced on Monday morning. Sykes averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in two Phoenix wins last week as the team extended its winning streak to six and moved to 2-0 in league play.
The fourth weekly award of the season for Sykes coupled with two player of the week honors for senior Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) gives Green Bay six awards in nine weeks this season, more than any Phoenix team in program history. The four weekly awards for Sykes are the most in a season by a Phoenix player and tied for the second most in league history.
Including once as a freshman and three times as a sophomore, Sykes has won a program record eight Horizon League Player of the Week awards in his career and is tied for second all-time in conference history with Butler’s Darin Archbold, Loyola’s Alfrederick Hughes and Xavier’s Byron Larkin. The all-time record is 10, set by Detroit’s Rashas Phillips.
On Thursday, Sykes posted an efficient 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and added five rebounds in Green Bay’s 66-55 win over Cleveland State. He culminated his week with a near triple-double in an 85-69 victory against Youngstown State. For the week, he shot 60.9 percent from the field.
Against YSU, the 5-foot-11 point guard finished with 24 points, nine assists and a career-high eight rebounds. Hitting 9-of-16 shots from the field, Sykes factored in 18 of the team’s 38 field goals without committing a turnover. He also made all six of his free throws and tallied three steals in the win.
On the strength of eight 20-point games this season, Sykes ranks third in the Horizon League in scoring (19.5) while also ranking second in assists per game (5.0). Sykes sits atop the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.8 and is also among the league leaders in free-throw percentage (5th), minutes (8th), steals (10th) and field goal percentage (11th).
With an 11-3 overall record and a 2-0 mark in Horizon League play, Green Bay will take a break from conference action on Tuesday night, traveling to Sykes’ hometown to play at Chicago State at 7 p.m.
