GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – In a non-conference defensive battle, the Green Bay women’s soccer team stood strong and played to a scoreless draw at DePaul on Wednesday afternoon at Wish Field.

With a combined 19 shots for the match the Phoenix defense limited the Blue Demons to just one shot on goal, which didn’t come until there was under five minutes remaining in the second overtime session.

“It was a great day for our ladies, to go on the road against a Big East team and earn the draw,” said head coach Trevor Warren. “We had some great chances to steal the win, but I am happy and proud of the ladies for their outstanding performance on the field today. It really shows the strength of our team this season.”

Green Bay had a strong first half, as Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) put the first shot on goal five minutes into the match. In the opening stanza Green Bay outshot DePaul, 4-1.

The second half saw the Phoenix put three shots on frame. Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) took the first scoring opportunity in the 55th minute, as she just missed the top corner of the goal with her shot. She knocked on the door again in 79th and 80th minutes, forcing DePaul keeper Alejandria Godinez into save situations.

With either team able to find the net, the match went to extra minutes. Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) had a shot on goal in the 95th minute, but DePaul also threatened as a shot by Rebekah Roller hit the post before a rebound shot by Ashleigh Goddard sailed wide.

Palmadottir recorded the only shot on goal in the second overtime and the defense continued to hold strong against the DePaul pressure before the match ended scoreless.

For the match, Green Bay outshot DePaul 10-9, while the Blue Demons owned a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo.) played the entire match and was forced to make just one save.

The women return home on Friday, hosting Northern Illinois at Aldo Santaga Stadium at 4 p.m.
