The Green Bay and Wright State softball teams combined for 29 total runs in Saturday’s doubleheader, but it took just one run to send Green Bay home with a loss in Sunday’s series final. The Phoenix (9-18, 3-6 HL) fell 1-0 to Wright State (9-26, 6-6 HL) on Sunday afternoon in an impressive day on the mound from sophomore Lauren Danner (Kaukauna, Wis.).

Danner (1-2) pitched all seven innings, giving up just five hits and an earned run with one strikeout. In six appearances this season, the sophomore standout now has 16 strikeouts and only three walks.

Green Bay picked up two hits in the bottom of the first, but senior Jess Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) was tagged out after trying to reach home following an errant throw. Neither team could muster another hit until the top of the fourth, when Wright State put a runner in scoring position with a one-out double. However, the Phoenix defense held strong to keep the game scoreless.

The Horizon League’s leader in doubles, freshman Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) picked up her 11th two-bagger of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. The Phoenix was unable to bring her home, however, to send the game to the top of the fifth.

The Raiders picked up the game’s lone run in the top of the fifth inning with a one-out, RBI double. The host team had a runner on third in the seventh, but Danner closed the half inning with a strikeout. Green Bay went three up and three down in the final half inning, sealing the win for Wright State.

Batting .375 for the season, Michalkiewicz continued her hot streak with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Hrncar and freshman Ashley Baker (Green Bay, Wis.) were the only two players to register hits in the contest, each going 1-for-2.

Wright State’s Krystian DeWitt (6-10) picked up the win in a complete game with four hits, a walk and five strikeouts.

The Phoenix will return to action on Tuesday in a doubleheader at Wisconsin. The games against the Badgers, who are receiving votes in the ESPN Top 25 poll, will be at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
