GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The 2012-13 Green Bay men's basketball team will take the floor for the first time in competition on Wednesday night when they host St. Norbert in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. As practices, scrimmages and media days have been held over the past few weeks, junior preseason All-Horizon League selection Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) has been getting his share of media attention.

The 7-foot-1 Brown, who to this point has accumulated numbers that compare to any Phoenix player in history through two seasons, enters his junior season with 739 points, 425 rebounds and 156 blocks. His play has led to being pegged first-team All-Horizon League as a sophomore and now a Preseason All-League selection for 2012-13.

Brown's production, size and ability are being recognized by college basketball writers nationally, including an appearance in hard copy of the USA Today's Horizon League preview on Oct. 18. The publication named Brown and sophomore Keifer Sykes to its preseason all-Horizon League squads.

Other preseason media coverage for Brown has included:

Green Bay Press-Gazette: Brown on NBA Radar
The Green Bay Press Gazette's Rob Demovsky highlights Brown's rise in the eyes of NBA scouts heading into his junior season. The 7-foot-1 Brown's skill level is getting him noticed, but Demovsky's article also touches on his humbleness and team-first attitude, including a great quote from his point guard, Sykes.

ESPN.com's Horizon League Preview
ESPN.com's Myron Medcalf previews all of the mid-major conferences, and calls Brown the X-Factor of the Horizon League while saying the Phoenix could "shake up the conference."

ESPN.com's Scariest Defenders
Medcalf was mentioning Brown again the same day when he listed the 7-foot-1 junior as an honorable mention selection in his list of the nation's scariest defenders. With good reason, Brown has 156 blocks in two seasons in a Green Bay uniform and has broked the program records for blocks in a game (11), season (89) and career.

Nation's Top-50 Big Men
In CBSSports.com's countdown of the nation's top-50 big men, Brown checks in at No. 42. Jeff Goodman says Brown is a "7-footer that few know anything about beyond the Horizon" and who "is still developing - quickly." None of Green Bay's opponents are on the list, but as a testament to the team's tough schedule, Wisconsin's Sam Dekker (37) and Ryan Evans (47) and Valparaiso's Ryan Broekhoff (43) check in on the wings list and Detroit's Ray McCallum (12) and Nevada's Deonte Burton (35) are on the list of top point guards.

Top Under-the-Radar Players
Brown's game is beginning to be noticed nationally, but he still flies under the radar. CBSSports.com recently ranked the junior as No. 11 on the list of the top-30 under-the-radar players in the country. Broekhoff can be found at No. 6 on the list while at the top is Nevada's Burton, whom the Phoenix will face on Nev. 18 in Reno at the World Vision Classic.

Blue Ribbon Report on ESPN.com
The annual Blue Ribbon Report on Green Bay can be found for ESPN Insiders at ESPN.com, with an extensive overview of the Phoenix roster heading into 2012-13. Brown is called, "the focal point of every opponent's scouting report." HorizonLeague.com took a quick look at the Blue Ribbon Report previews for all of the conference schools.

CBS Sports' Horizon League Preview
Brown is slated as one of the league's best players in CBSSports.com's preview of the Horizon League. In the preview, an anonymous league coach said, "What makes Brown such a defensive matchup, you can't put a plodder on him and you can't put a smaller guy on him. At this level, he's a tough match."

College Sports Madness All-High Major All-America Teams
College Sports Madness announced its All-High Major Preseason All-American teams last week, and included Brown as a third-team selection. McCallum joined him on the third team while Burton was tabbed to the fourth team.

Horizon League Hoops Points Per Player Possession
HorizonLeagueHoops.com created a metric called points per player possession and recently announced the leaders from the 2011-12 season. Brown ranked 17th among returning players, and senior Brennan Cougill (19th) and sophomore Keifer Sykes (23rd) were also ranked in the top-25, but it was their junior teammate Kam Cerroni who topped the charts for all Horizon League players at 1.40 points/possession.
