DAYTON, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
– For the second consecutive season, the Green Bay men’s tennis team is the Horizon League regular season champion after finishing with a perfect 6-0 record in conference play. The Phoenix (16-7, 6-0 HL) defeated Wright State (10-13, 4-2 HL) 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the WSU Tennis Courts, claiming the regular season crown outright and locking up the No. 1 seed in next weekend’s Horizon League Championship.

“We are very happy to win another regular season conference title,” Green Bay head coach Mark Thomas said. “We are going to enjoy it tonight, and then tomorrow we will get right back to work on our main goal, which is winning another conference tournament title. We didn’t play our best tennis today, but our guys keep fighting their way to some tough wins. Credit a very strong Wright State team for making it a battle without one of their key players.”

Just like on Friday against Detroit, the Phoenix dropped the doubles point to start the match, but bounced back to claim five of the six singles contests to post the 5-2 win.

All three doubles matches were hotly contested, as the Raiders gutted out a pair of close wins to clinch the match’s opening point. Junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) started the day with an 8-6 win at No. 1 over WSU’s Hayden Joblin and Ricardo Pineda, but the Raiders claimed 8-7 victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to take the 1-0 lead.

Scott knotted the match a 1-1 with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory over Pineda at No. 3 singles, but the Raiders’ Michal Lyzwa put his team back on top 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) at No. 4.

Freshman Jorge Gonzalez Soler (Madrid, Spain) evened things up once again with his 6-4, 6-2 win over Myles Harris at No. 6 singles, and Tenzer put the Phoenix on top for good with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Dan Gilbert at the No. 1 spot.

Sophomore Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) made it 4-2 in favor of the visitors thanks to his 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 win over Joblin at No. 2 singles, and Rowan Isaaks (London, England) finished things off with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 result against Marc Sodini at No. 5.

The top-seeded Phoenix will have a first-round bye in the 2014 Horizon League Championship, which will be played in Ann Arbor, Mich., at the University of Michigan Tennis Center from April 25-27. Green Bay will play on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT, taking on the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 match.
