GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Phoenix senior Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) finished the day with three hits and two RBIs, but the Cleveland State softball team slipped past Green Bay, 7-6, in Horizon League action Friday afternoon at Viking Field.

Green Bay dropped to 16-10 and 3-3 in HL action, while the Vikings improved to 4-3 in conference and 20-13 overall, as the teams played the first of a three-game weekend series.

Green Bay found its offense from the start, scoring two runs in the top half of the first inning. A pair of leadoff walks issued to junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and senior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) started things off, before both moved into scoring position with a groundout. Senior Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) drove in the first run with her single, and then Stacey Butts’s two-out base hit made it 2-0 Phoenix.

The CSU offense was limited to just two hits in the first three innings, keeping the score at 2-0 midway through the game. In the bottom of the fourth, though, Cleveland State capitalized off three hits and a Phoenix error, as Nena Doran tied the game at 2-2 with her double to left. Two batters later, Darien Ward laid down a bunt single that drove in another run, putting the Vikings on top.

In the fifth, the Phoenix answered with three runs of their own to retake the lead, all coming with two outs. Back-to-back doubles by sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) and Shannon Butts made it 3-3, with a freshman Katelyn Huemmer (Sun Prairie, Wis.) double and Stacey Butts single each driving in another run to give the Phoenix a 5-3 advantage.  CSU again put up a three-spot in the home half, with Alyson Broschk’s three-run home run to center field leaving the score 6-5 after five innings.

Reinke placed a double down the left field line with one out in the sixth, driving in sophomore Kelli Hutchinson (Trevor, Wis.) from second and tying the score. Back-to-back outs ended the Phoenix threat though, and the Vikings were retired in order to close out the sixth inning.

Green Bay also was set down in the top of the seventh inning with no damage done, but the leadoff Viking batter in the bottom of the seventh, Cynthia Woodard, blasted a solo shot to left to walk off with the win.

Susan Knight earned the win and improved to 10-10 with a 2.1-inning relief outing for CSU, while Green Bay senior reliever Ashley Nannemann (5-6) was saddled with the loss, after the Burlington, Wis., native pitched 1.2 innings.

The two teams will be back in action Saturday, with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
