GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay men’s basketball standouts Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) and Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 12 First Team, the NABC office announced on Wednesday. The team was voted on by the coaches in District 12, which represents the Horizon League and the Summit League.

Sykes was tabbed to the first team for the second-straight season while Brown was voted All-District 12 for the third time in his career. He was a first-team selection in 2011-12 and a second-team pick in 2012-13.

Youngstown State’s Kendrick Perry, North Dakota State’s Taylor Braun and Oakland’s Travis Bader rounded out the first team while the second team included Jordan Dykstra (SDSU), Lavonte Dority (Valparaiso), Bryn Forbes (Cleveland State), Juwan Howard, Jr. (Detroit) and Marshall Bjorklund (NDSU).

Sykes has been terrific throughout his junior campaign and has already gained recognition as First-Team All-Horizon League and as a U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-District V selection. The 2013-14 Horizon League Player of the Year is averaging 20.3 points, 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game. Sykes has reached double figures in 29 of 30 games and his 608 points scored this season are the fourth-most in Green Bay history.

During the non-conference season, Sykes scored 32 points against Wisconsin, was named to the Great Alaska Shootout All-Tournament Team, and led Green Bay to a win over ACC champion Virginia with 21 points and 10 assists.

In Horizon League play, Sykes averaged 21.1 points per game while scoring at least 14 points in every league game as Green Bay won its first regular season conference title in 18 seasons.

The two-time All-Horizon League First-Team selection has scored 1,482 points and dished out 394 assists in his three-year Phoenix career, ranking in the top-10 in program history in each category. He won six Player of the Week awards in 2013-14 and 10 in his career, both league records.

The 5-foot-11 Sykes excels at getting to the rim, leading to 26 dunks and numerous trips to the free-throw line in 2013-14. With 188 free throws made this season, Sykes broke his own single-season school record. Totaling 415 in three seasons, Sykes also broke Tony Bennett’s Division I record for career made free throws.

Compiling the best season of his career, Brown was named to an All-Horizon League team for the third time in his career and for the second time to the All-Defensive squad. The 7-foot-1 senior is averaging 15.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game. In addition to points and blocks, Brown is posting career-best numbers in field goal percentage (.481) and three-point field goal percentage (.433).

Brown has been exceptional in leading Green Bay to its best record in road games since 1995-96. In 10 road games, Brown is averaging 19.1 points per game while shooting 55.5 percent from the field and 51.4 percent from long range.

Defensively, Brown broke his own single-season program blocks record with 93 and has helped the Phoenix shatter the Horizon League record for team rejections in a season (220). With Brown as the defensive anchor, Green Bay ranks second nationally in blocks per game and 11th in the country in field goal percentage defense (.389).

Brown has won Horizon League Player of the Week accolades four times during the 2013-14 season, including twice during league play. His senior campaign also included two milestone performances. On Nov. 23, Brown recorded a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots, and on Dec. 21, he tallied a career-high 40 points in a win over Fairfield.

The only player in Horizon League history to accumulate 1,500-plus points, 750-plus rebounds and 250-plus blocks in his career, Brown ranks seventh in Green Bay history in points (1669), third in rebounds (794) and first in blocks (308). The senior’s 794 career rebounds are a program record at the Division I level.
