Sykes Voted to Star-Studded USBWA All-District Team
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – In the midst of one of the best seasons in Green Bay history, junior Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) earned another prestigious honor on Tuesday when he was named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-District V Team.
District V is comprised of the 48 Division I teams in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Sykes was joined on the star-studded All-District V Team by eight players in the Big Ten Conference and one player in the American Athletic Conference.
The 2013-14 Horizon League Player of the Year, Sykes has been terrific throughout his junior campaign. The Chicago native is averaging 20.3 points, 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game. Sykes has reached double figures in 29 of 30 games and his 608 points scored this season are the fourth-most in Green Bay history.
During the non-conference season, Sykes scored 32 points against Wisconsin, was named to the Great Alaska Shootout All-Tournament Team, and led Green Bay to a win over ACC champion Virginia with 21 points and 10 assists.
In Horizon League play, Sykes averaged 21.1 points per game while scoring at least 14 points in every league game as Green Bay won its first regular season conference title in 18 seasons.
The two-time All-Horizon League First-Team selection has scored 1,482 points and dished out 394 assists in his three-year Phoenix career, ranking in the top-10 in program history in each category. He won six Player of the Week awards in 2013-14 and 10 in his career, both league records.
The 5-foot-11 Sykes excels at getting to the rim, leading to 26 dunks and numerous trips to the free-throw line in 2013-14. With 188 free throws made this season, Sykes broke his own single-season school record. Totaling 415 in three seasons, Sykes also broke Tony Bennett’s Division I record for career made free throws.
