GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Two days after joining the program’s 1,000-point club and leading Green Bay to a third-place finish at the Great Alaska Shootout, junior Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

With six in his career, Sykes has now won more Horizon League Player of the Week awards than any player in Green Bay history and is tied for seventh in conference history.

In three games in Anchorage, Sykes averaged 24.7 points and 6.7 assists per game and reached 20 or more points in games against Pepperdine (23), Harvard (26) and Tulsa (25). Sykes knocked down 29-of-31 free throws for the week, including a 12-for-12 effort in the opening-round win over Pepperdine.

In Green Bay’s 67-59 victory over Tulsa in the third-place game, Sykes scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the second half and dished out nine assists en route to joining the 1,000-point club. Including six made field goals and nine assists, Sykes accounted for 15 of Green Bay’s 22 made field goals. He also connected on 13-of-14 free throws in the win.

Doing so in 70 games, Sykes is the third-fastest player in the program’s Division I history to reach 1,000 career points. He has scored 1,011 points in 70 games, good for a scoring average of 14.4 points per game. Since his 18th birthday on Dec. 30, 2011, Sykes has scored 926 point and averaged 16.2 points per game.

Beginning with his 32-point effort against Wisconsin on Nov. 16, Sykes has put together one of the best offensive streaks in Green Bay history. The 5-foot-11 point guard has scored 20 or more points in five-straight games, including his three 20-plus point games in as many days at the Great Alaska Shootout.

During the streak, Sykes is averaging 25.4 points and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 52.2 percent from the field and 92.7 percent from the free-throw line (38-41). He is the first Phoenix player since Jeff Nordgaard in 1995-96 (Jan. 20-Feb. 10, 1996) to score 20 or more in 5-straight games.

Sykes now has 16 career 20-point games and has reached double figures in 17-straight games, 34 of his past 36 contests and 54 times in his career.

Green Bay returns home to the Resch Center on Saturday, hosting Virginia at 4 p.m. at the Resch Center. Virginia (7-1) is coached by Phoenix Hall of Famer and all-time leading scorer Tony Bennett.
