GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay men’s basketball senior Daniel Turner will graduate from UW-Green Bay this December and leave the program to explore other opportunities to finish his college basketball career, Turner and head coach Brian Wardle announced on Wednesday. Turner, who suffered his second ACL injury in February, is currently in the rehabilitation process and has one season of eligibility remaining.

Turner, a native of McCordsville, Ind., is set to graduate in December with a bachelor’s degree in business management and an economics minor. He entered the fall semester with a staggering 3.97 grade point average.

“I have made this tough decision because I am graduating in December and will not be able to make it back on the court this season due to the extended time needed for my knee rehabilitation process.” said Turner. “I want to explore some other opportunities for my final season of athletic eligibility, especially seeing if there is an opportunity to play with my younger brother.

“I want to thank the University, the athletics department, Coach Wardle and the coaching staff. Through my career I have grown a lot, learned a great deal, and matured immensely. Green Bay has been my home for the last three and a half years, and I have met many good people, made special friends and established great connections. I am thankful to the many people who have helped me throughout my journey, and I would never close any doors to making Green Bay my home in the future.

"This year's team is very special and has great potential. I have built strong relationships with many of the players and wish them the best of luck in their future. This season should be a great one for the Phoenix!"

Turner started 26 games as a freshman for the Phoenix in 2010-11 and averaged 6.6 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game. His 180 rebounds rank as the fourth-most by a freshman in program history behind only Jordan Fouse, Dennis Woelffler and Ron Ripley.

As a sophomore and junior, Turner was limited to just 14 games each season due to injuries. Turner suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on Dec. 31, 2011 at Valparaiso, ending his sophomore season. In 2012-13, Turner’s junior campaign was cut short after 14 games due to a torn ACL in his left knee.

Turner has been extremely active on campus and in the community during his time with the Phoenix. A member of the Horizon League Honor Roll in each of his semesters, he has also been a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Athletes in Action and the Society for Human Resource Management. He has also worked as a campus tour guide for the Office of Admissions.

During the past two summers, Turner has completed internships with Schreiber Foods in Contract Manufacturing and for Hagemeister Park in Marketing and Management.

Daniel Turner has been a big part of this program’s foundation, improvement and growth during his time at Green Bay,” said Wardle. “Although injuries have prohibited him from producing as much on the floor in the past two seasons as he would’ve liked, he has produced in many other ways off the floor. We are very appreciative and grateful to him for his time in the program, and we wish him the best of health in the future. He is a competitor and he loves the game. We hope that he can find a perfect place to finish his college career healthy and enjoying the game of basketball.

“Daniel is a young man who has been very active and involved in this community during his time here, and I could definitely see him back here one day making an impact in Northeast Wisconsin.”
