DETROIT, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women’s soccer team had a strong defensive performance against Detroit, but an unfortunate own goal just under three minutes into the first overtime session gave the Titans a 1-0 triumph on Saturday afternoon at Titan Field.

The win improved Detroit to 7-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League, while Green Bay fell to 4-5-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

“I’m really disappointed for the girls who fought hard for the entire game and lost in a very unfortunate deflection,” said head coach Trevor Warren. “Detroit was picked to win the conference in preseason, so to come to their field and shut down their offense for a large part of the game was a testament to their hard work.”

Detroit applied pressure early, putting two shots on goal in the opening 15 minutes. However, the Green Bay defense clamped down and did not allow the Titans another shot in the half, as its offense turned up the tempo. Renee Therrien (Winnipeg, Manitoba) put a shot on goal in the 37th minute and Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) had another threatening shot just over a minute later, but Detroit keeper Martha Dunbar came up with saves on both attempts as the match went into halftime scoreless.

At the break Green Bay led in both shots, 3-2, and corners, 7-2.

Despite scoring opportunities for both teams in the second half, neither squad was able to find the back of the net. In the second half Detroit let shots, 5-2, and corners were even at two apiece.

Heading to extra minutes to settle the match, it was an own goal by the Green Bay defense that proved to be the difference. A cross by Detroit's Kait’yn Quarrell headed into the box and deflected off a Phoenix and into the net to give the Titans their first conference win of the season.

For the match, Green Bay owned a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks, while the Titans had a slim 7-5 lead in shots. Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo) played the entire match and made four saves. Hartmann and Katie Schulz (Plymouth, Minn.) led the team with two shots apiece.

Green Bay returns to action next Saturday in the first game of a women’s/men’s doubleheader at Aldo Santaga Stadium, taking on Cleveland State at noon.
