GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Junior Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) made seven birdies as part of an eventful 1-under par 71 on Monday at Green Bay Country Club, leading the Green Bay men’s golf team to a 4-over par 292 in the opening round of the Green Bay Invitational. Boockmeier sits two strokes off the lead in third place while the Phoenix is in second place, eight strokes behind Loyola.

On the 7,097 yard, par-72 course, Loyola had three of its five players shoot par or better as the Ramblers carded an impressive team score of 4-under 284. Chicago State (298, +10), St. Ambrose (302, +14), Creighton (304, +16), Lewis (309, +21) and Green Bay’s white team (309, +21) round out the field. Tuesday’s final round at Green Bay Country Club will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 p.m.

Starting on hole No. 11, Boockmeier had an up-and-down round of golf which included more ups than downs. After bogeying his opening hole, the junior birdied No. 12. After another bogey, he birdied holes 16 and 17 and made the turn toward the front nine at 1-under. Finding the hazard at No. 1, Boockmeier carded a double bogey before birdieing four of his next five holes to get to 3-under after 14. The Green Bay native parred the next three holes before a closing double bogey left him two shots off the individual lead.

Loyola’s Nick Dennis posted a 1-under 69 and teammate Alex Cusumano carded a 2-under 70 to lead the way and join Boockmeier as the only players to shoot under par.

Green Bay sophomore Gene Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) made three birdies and three bogeys en route to an even par round of 72. Senior Joe Collard (Marinette, Wis.) was second in the field with 13 pars and made two birdies as part of a 1-over par 73, and senior Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.) carded a 4-over 76.

The Green Bay white team was led by junior Chad Bonis (New Berlin, Wis.), who was tied for 13th place after a 3-over par 75. Sophomores Joe Du Chateau (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Ryan Reinke (Brillion, Wis.) were a stroke back in a tie for 18th after matching 76s.
