Freshman Keifer Sykes had 27 points in Saturday's win at UIC.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Freshman Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) has been awarded for a strong week in which he led Green Bay to three wins and had a career-high 27 points in a homecoming game at UIC on Saturday. The Chicago native was named co-Player of the Week on Monday as announced by the Horizon League office. He shared the award with Milwaukee's Tony Meier.

Sykes, on one of the best individual streaks in the Horizon League after scoring in double figures in 10 games in a row and 15 of the last 16, saved his best performance of the regular season for Green Bay's finale, a 71-63 win at UIC. The freshman took over the game in his hometown, scoring six consecutive baskets in the second half after UIC cut the Phoenix lead to one. Sykes finished 11-of-18 from the field and scored 14 points in the final eight minutes while adding six assists.

Sykes also had 13 points, four assists and four rebounds while playing 40 minutes in a 71-67 win over Cleveland State on Tuesday and logged 41 minutes in a 73-70 overtime win over Loyola on Thursday, tallying 13 points and eight assists.

For the week, Sykes averaged 17.7 points and 6.3 assists per game. In league play, he ranks eighth in the league in scoring (13.8 points per game), third in assists (4.5 per game) and is tied for first in assist-to-TO ratio (2-to-1). Since turning 18, Sykes is averaging 15.2 points per game and 4.8 assist per game.

It is the first weekly award for Sykes and the second of the season for the Phoenix. Junior Brennan Cougill (Sioux City, Iowa) was named Player of the Week on Dec. 26 after scoring 19 points and grabbing 19 rebounds against Idaho.

Now winners of five games in a row, Green Bay will open the Horizon League Tournament on Tuesday at Youngstown State at 6:05 p.m. The seventh-seeded Phoenix and the sixth-seeded Penguins have split two previous meetings this season.
