GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – In his four-year career at Green Bay, Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) rewrote the Phoenix record books for blocked shots. He broke the career record during his sophomore season and swatted 309 shots by the end of his senior year, when he also broke his own single-season record with 94 rejections. Brown holds the top-four single-season totals and seven of the top-12 single-game marks.

During Brown’s career, Green Bay broke the team blocks record in four-straight years, including in 2013-14 when the Phoenix swatted a Horizon League record 223 shots and ranked second in the country in blocks per game (7.2).

So with Brown departed and his sights set on blocking his next shot in the NBA, will the Phoenix defense stop turning away its opponents’ shots at the rim? Not so fast.

The 2014-15 roster includes 212 career rejections, including 97 from two-time Horizon League All-Defensive Team selection Jordan Fouse (Racine, Wis.). In two seasons, Fouse already ranks fifth all-time in school history, and his 49 blocks in 2012-13 and 48 in 2013-14 rank fifth and sixth in program history behind only Brown’s four season totals.

Greg Mays (Chicago, Ill.) also ranks in the top-10 in rejections as he will enter his senior year with 60, good enough for ninth all-time. The 6-foot-9 forward swatted a career-best 31 shots last season.

Despite playing just 16.1 minutes per game, Kenneth Lowe (Little Chute, Wis.) blocked 28 shots in his freshman season. That total ranks fourth among all freshmen in program history, and could balloon if Lowe’s minutes increase significantly.

6-foot-8 senior Alfonzo McKinnie (Chicago, Ill.) and 6-foot-11 sophomore newcomer Henry Uwadiae (Benin City, Nigeria) could also prove to be viable shot blockers next season.

Replacing Brown’s presence in the paint will not be easy, and breaking the single-season blocks record again may be unlikely, but expect opponents to still think twice when driving the lane in 2014-15.

IN 2014-15…
Green Bay will take the floor as the reigning Horizon League regular season champs. The Phoenix loses a three-time All-Horizon League performer in Brown, but returns four starters (Keifer Sykes, Carrington Love, Fouse and Mays) and 10 players overall. In 2013-14, those 10 players accounted for 73.5 percent of the team’s points, 79.1 percent of the rebounds and 86.7 percent of the assists.

Sykes is the reigning Horizon League Player of the Year after averaging 20.3 points, 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game as a junior. Mays was a double-digit scorer at 10.3 points per game and shot 58.6 percent from the field, and Fouse is a two-time Horizon League All-Defensive Team selection with a career rebounding average of 7.7.

Wardle, the 2014 Horizon League Coach of the Year, enters his fifth season at the helm of the program with a 71-56 overall record. He is slated to welcome back his entire coaching staff, including associate head coach Brian Barone, assistant coaches Chrys Cornelius and Jimmie Foster, director of basketball operations Colin Schneider and video coordinator Rick Karius.
