GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s basketball team returned to town in winning fashion on Saturday, defeating Wright State 62-55. On Wednesday, the Phoenix will be looking to extend its home winning streak to 11 games when UIC visits the Resch Center at 7 p.m. The contest will be the middle game of a three-game homestand, which concludes on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Milwaukee.

The first 1,000 fans on Wednesday night will receive a free t-shirt presented by Baylake Bank.

Senior Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) returned from missing the first game of his standout career and made an immediate impact defensively against Wright State, but his frontcourt teammate Greg Mays (Chicago, Ill.) took over on offense. Mays made 9-of-10 shots from the field en route to a game-high 22 points. Mays and Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) combined to score 27 of Green Bay’s 33 second-half points.

Green Bay’s smallest margin of victory in Horizon League play came in a 69-64 win at UIC on Jan. 19. The Phoenix trailed 63-61 with less than three minutes to play before closing the game on an 8-1 run. Sykes scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:51 remaining.

LIVE COVERAGE: For fans unable to attend Wednesday night’s game, the contest will be available on the Horizon League Network and on WNFL 1440 AM with Matt Menzl (play-by-play) and Cordero Barkley (analyst) calling the action.

INSIDE THE SERIES: Green Bay has faced UIC more than any other program in its history, and the Phoenix holds a 52-36 edge in the all-time series. That record includes a 30-14 advantage in games played in Green Bay. The Phoenix has defeated the Flames nine-straight times at the Resch Center with UIC last winning 63-55 back on Feb. 18, 2004.

RECORDS IN REACH: Brown’s return last Wednesday kept him in pursuit of a couple of records. The 7-foot-1 senior has 756 career rebounds, just 11 shy of breaking Terry Evans (2005-09) Division I program record. With 284 career blocks, Brown needs 26 more rejections to break the Horizon League record of 309 set last season by Youngstown State’s Damian Eargle. Brown has held the Phoenix career record since his sophomore season.

HOME SWEET HOME: Green Bay’s win over Wright State was its 10th-straight at the Resch Center. The Phoenix is 11-1 at home in 2013-14 and 5-0 in Horizon League action. In 12 home games, the team is shooting 48.6 percent from the field at home while holding opponents to just 35.1 percent from the field and 27 percent from long range. In the past four seasons under head coach Brian Wardle, Green Bay has a 45-10 record on its home floor.

FIRST MEETING: Of Green Bay’s eight Horizon League wins, the smallest margin of victory came against UIC when the Phoenix posted a 69-64 victory over the Flames on Jan. 19. Green Bay trailed 63-61 with three minutes to play before closing the game on an 8-1 run. Alec Brown (23) and Keifer Sykes (21) combined for 44 points in the win, with Sykes scoring 19 points in the second half.

A-MAYS-ING: Mays continued his strong junior season with an impressive game against Wright State. Mays made 9-of-10 shots from the field and scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. In three games on ESPN TV networks this season, Mays is averaging 20 points on 71 percent shooting (22-31). On the year, Mays is averaging career highs in points (10.7), rebounds (5.4), blocks (1.0) and field goal percentage (.590).

SYKES SET APART: Ranking 20th nationally in points per game, Sykes is one of just two players (Lafayette’s Elfrid Payton) nationally averaging 20-plus points, five-plus assists and four-plus rebounds per game. Shooting 49.3 percent, Sykes ranks 10th in field goal percentage among players averaging 20-plus points per game.

MOVING ON UP: Brown now ranks eighth in Green Bay history in scoring (1,552 points). Sykes has scored 1,327 career points in 86 games, and with 18 points against Wright State passed Ryan Tillema (2005-09) into 13th place in program history.

BLOCK PARTY: With 161 blocked shots in 22 games this season, Green Bay needs only two more rejections to break the single-season school record of 162, set last season. With an average 7.3 blocks per game, the Phoenix ranks second nationally in blocks per game behind only St. John’s (8.4).

BROWN’S BLOCKS: Brown is having the best season of his career, which includes blocks. Averaging 3.3 per game, the 7-foot-1 senior is 10th nationally. With 69 blocks in 2013-14, Brown is on pace to break his own school record of 89, set in 2011-12. Brown now owns each of the top-four spots on the program’s single-season blocks chart (59, 67, 69, 89).

A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN: Brown is in the midst of the most impressive season and most impressive stretch of his standout career. The 7-foot-1 center is posting career-high numbers in points, field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and blocked shots. Against Detroit, he became the only player in program or Horizon League history to tally 1,500-plus points (1546), 750 rebounds (752) and 250 blocked shots (281).
