Former assistant coach Sommer May was named the fifth head coach in the program’s 38-year history on Oct. 28, 2013. She began her time with the Phoenix as an assistant for the program in September 2013, and provided valuable leadership and experience for a Phoenix roster comprised entirely of underclassmen.

A 2004 graduate of Minnesota, May played Division I tennis her freshman and sophomore year of college at Marquette. She was also a two-time state champion in high school while starring at Green Bay Notre Dame.

May still enjoys a successful competitive career, having held the No. 1 ranking in both 2010 and 2011 in the USTA Wisconsin Women’s Open division. Competing in level 4.5 matches, she posted an impressive 7-1 record during the summer of 2013 while ranked as the No. 3 player in the state. Also on her USTA resume are championship titles at the Greater Milwaukee Open, the Midwest Indoor Championship and the Wisconsin Adult Open.

When she’s not on the court, May is a proud wife and mother of two, as well as an active volunteer with various organizations in the Green Bay Area.
