Mark Thomas enters his fifth season as Green Bay's men's tennis coach in 2012-13. The Phoenix has steadily improved under Thomas since his hiring in 2008, winning nine matches his first season, 13 his second, 16 his third and a school-record 19 wins in 2011-12.

Thomas took the Phoenix to new heights in 2011-12, winning the program's first Horizon League Championship with a 4-1 win over four-time defending champion Cleveland State and earning the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance. Green Bay traveled to Malibu, Calif., for the NCAAs where it fell to No. 7 Pepperdine, who went on to advance to the Final Four.

He coached a trio of All-Horizon League performers in 2011-12, including first-teamer Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.), who finished his career as Green Bay's all-time singles wins leader (94-42).

Thomas was named the Horizon League's Men's Tennis Coach of the Year in 2010-11 after leading the Phoenix to a 16-8 (6-1 Horizon League) record and its first appearance in the conference championship match since 2004.

Thomas, an owner of Western Racquet & Fitness Club in Green Bay, has served as a tennis professional at Western since May of 2004. A number of his former pupils have achieved state, regional and national rankings. Some have gone on to play collegiately at the NCAA Division I and III levels.

In addition to his teaching duties, Thomas has served key roles in the business operations, development and accounting areas for the club.

Thomas graduated from Marquette University in May of 2002 with a degree in finance. At Marquette, he was a four-year member of the tennis team and was named team captain his senior year. He also served as a Student-Athlete Council representative.

As a prep, Thomas was the team captain and No. 1 singles player for Bloomfield Hills (Mich.) Lahser High School. He was named all-league, all-county, all-area and all-state. Thomas was ranked in the top 20 in the Midwest as a junior in the 18-and-under division and played Jr. Davis Cup for Southeastern Michigan.

Thomas and his wife, Mary, have a son, Alexander, and a daughter, Anna.
