GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - With two regular season matches remaining in its schedule, the Green Bay volleyball team will look to clinch a berth in the Horizon League Championship with a win at Youngstown State Friday night at 6 p.m. The Phoenix, who will earn a spot with a win or a Wright State loss, also plays at Cleveland State Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Phoenix (10-16, 6-8 HL) downed Youngstown State (4-23, 2-12) in Green Bay on Oct. 5 when Green Bay got eight blocks from senior Kelly Mischler (Kaukauna, Wis.). Fellow senior Carlie Willison (Greenfield, Wis.) led the team with 12 kills while junior Brittany Groth (Oak Creek, Wis.) collected a match-high 16 digs.
Friday night should be a good night for Groth as the junior needs just two digs to set the single-season school record. The libero enters the match with 577 digs, just one short of Megan Elfering's school record of 578 set in 2008. Groth leads the Horizon League and is tied for 12th nationally in digs per set.
Green Bay will seek revenge against a Cleveland State (18-7, 11-3 HL) team that is second in the league standings and swept the Phoenix on Oct. 4. Mischler tied a school record for blocks in a three-set match with nine in the meeting against the Vikings.
Head coach Debbie Kirch sat down with this week to discuss the team's upcoming weekend matches as well as the recent play of Monica Anderson (Cottage Grove, Wis.) and Groth's consistency. To watch the episode, click here.
Both matches will be shown on the Horizon League Network and will also have live stats. For links to keep up with the Phoenix in Ohio, visit the volleyball schedule.
