With the 2010-11 school year coming to a close (just two more days of final exams before Graduation on Saturday!), Monica Anderson, one of our freshman outside hitters, took time to reflect on her first collegiate off-season as she finishes her first full year of college.

As the spring semester finishes up, I realize it is already the end of my freshman year here at Green Bay and I can't believe it went so fast!
The beginning of our spring season seems like it was a long time ago, but I still remember getting our calendars and seeing how early practice times were going to be. I am definitely not a morning person. When I was in high school I would be upset when I had to wake up for school at 8! During our spring season if we got to sleep in until 7:30, we were pretty excited! However, I found that once I got into the schedule of, it was nice to have morning practices so we could focus on school in the afternoon.
In the spring, we lift and condition a lot which is way more intense than high school workouts. We learned new ways of lifting too and that took some getting used to, but all of the freshmen saw major improvements by the end of the season! Spring matches were similar to club because we mainly played in tournaments and they are best of three instead of best of five. Even though the tournaments had the same structure, they were just one day and thankfully we did not have to officiate as much, like we did in club.
Overall, spring season in college is a lot different than high school club. We do so much more conditioning/strength training in college, but because our "school day" isn't as long as in high school, we have a lot more extra time during the day. Also, we get out of school earlier in the year, so we get to go home in May, which is really nice considering I still had a whole month left of school at this time last year!
I am really amazed by how quickly Freshman year flew by, it seems like just yesterday my parents were dropping me off for the first day of preseason!! And in just under 100 days, I'll be starting my second preseason!
Have a great summer!
