GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay volleyball team has had a productive spring season, and head coach Debbie Kirch's team will play its final tournament on Saturday at Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. In this week's update, GreenBayPhoenix.com looks back at the team's play in the UIC Tournament and ahead to the competition Green Bay will play at Northwestern.
Green Bay played three matches while at Horizon League opponent UIC's spring tournament, with matches against Northern Illinois, UIC and DePaul. Senior Carlie Willison (Greenfield, Wis.) was a leader for the Phoenix statistically, totaling 16 kills and 18 digs in the matches.
Senior Abbey Gitter (Hortonville, Wis.) led the team in kills with 21 while junior Carmen Leitermann (Schofield, Wis.) and sophomore Lyndsay Zabkowicz (Oak Creek, Wis.) each added nine. Junior Brittany Groth (Oak Creek, Wis.), the team's libero from a season ago, recorded a team-high 35 digs.
"I was encouraged by what I saw from our outsides, specifically from Carlie," said Kirch. "She stood out individually to me. It was the best she has swung in her entire career here, so hopefully that is a sign of things to come. Our defense, starting with the block, needs to get better and more consistent."
In this Saturday's spring finale, Green Bay will again face UIC along with Illinois State and Northwestern in Evanston. It will be a stiff day of competition as Northwestern won 20 matches and Illinois State posted 19 wins in 2010. The matches will be played at Welsh Ryan Arena and are open to the public.
