GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay volleyball team is in the midst of its spring season, with two tournaments completed and head coach Debbie Kirch and her team heading to Chicago for a tournament at UIC on Saturday. As the team goes through its spring schedule, GreenBayPhoenix.com will look at the team's progress.
Green Bay faced some stiff competition in Madison with matches against Wisconsin, Northern Iowa, Marquette, North Dakota State and Michigan Tech. The Phoenix swept its two sets against Michigan Tech, split a pair of sets against Northern Iowa and fell in its two close sets against Wisconsin.
Kirch was pleased with the play of Abbey Gitter (Hortonville, Wis.), who had 30 kills on the day to lead the Phoenix. Lyndsay Zabkowicz (Oak Creek, Wis.) added 19 kills for Green Bay while Monica Anderson (Cottage Grove, Wis.) led the squad in hitting percentage with 16 kills and just four errors.
"Abbey Gitter is proving she is ready to shoulder a lot of the offensive load," said Kirch. "She's been playing six rotations consistently and getting set both in the front and back row. It's great to have that caliber of player on our team, but in order for us to achieve our goals, we need more than her. By the end of the day, teams were keying in on her, and she was facing a double block every time and getting worn down from all the swings she took."
This Saturday, Green Bay will compete in a tournament in Chicago at UIC. The Phoenix will face Northern Illinois, UIC and DePaul in full three-set matches. All matches will be played in the Flames Athletic Center. The tournament has free admission and is open to the public.
