Winter Warm-up Clinics: A Privilege
By: Haley Oelke
The players of the Green Bay volleyball team volunteered their time on three consecutive Sunday mornings this winter in order to work with girls, grades 4-12, at our first ever Winter Warm-up Clinics. Thanks to them and all the kids who attended on making them a success!
Sleepy eyes, chattering teeth and anxious girls were the sight we saw at 8 am on the last Sunday of January when our Winter Warm-up clinics began. This clinic was especially fun to work because it was a smaller group of girls than we usually work with so it was easier for us as coaches to have 1-on-1 time with them. It is always a privilege to be able to share our volleyball knowledge with girls who want to improve their skills. The girls were excited to work with us and we feel the same way. While some parents dropped their daughters off, others pulled up a chair to the gym windows to watch. While the girls do a drill, we walk around and try to give input on their technique. Needless to say, the gym gets quite loud with girls running for balls, calling for the ball and coaches giving feedback. As the sessions near an end, the girls become more comfortable with us and vice versa. Essentially, the girls walk away with a t-shirt, skills to use in the future and an experience with Division I athletes.
Once we step in front of the girls at these clinics, there is a certain look in their eyes. You can tell that they look up to us and are truly excited to have the opportunity to work with us. We are genuinely there to share the knowledge about a sport we love. As we see these girls progress right in front of our eyes, there is a sense of pride that overcomes us. We are proud to see improvement among the girls and also proud to know that we made an impact on their volleyball skills. After the second weekend of the clinics we received an email from a parent of one of the girls. She explained how much her daughter enjoyed being at the clinic and how it was the most intense clinic she had ever attended. The parent went on to say that the daughter's only regret was that she did not attend the first weekend! Being able to hear positive feedback like that from a parent is an indescribable feeling. Knowing the hard work we put into these clinics made that big of an effect is rewarding in itself.
We would like to thank all the girls who attended the clinics (and all the parents who sent their daughters to the clinics!). We learn from you guys as well! We hope to see you at the summer camps or even at the Winter Warm-up clinics next year!
