Where are They Now -- Catching up with former Phoenix Abby Bergsma
Abby Bergsma played for the Phoenix from 2005-08 and her name can be found all over the Green Bay records book. She is in the top 10 of career stats in 5 different categories: #3 in block assists and total blocks, #4 in kills, #5 in solo blocks and #9 in kills per game. She also earned Horizon League All-Tournament honors in 2006. She graduated in 2009 with a degree in human biology and is currently living in Nevada and working for the US Geological Survey. Catch up on what she is up to and you can also follow her on her personal blog - some beautiful photos!:
I have an internship through the Student Conservation Association and am working for the US Geological Survey (USGS) in Henderson, NV (10 miles outside of Las Vegas). I spend my weeks in the Mojave Desert about 3 hours south of here, where I camp four nights a week. During the day, I survey desert washes to record the presence of off-highway vehicles (OHVs). The 3-million acre study area we cover is critical habitat for desert wildlife (more specifically, the desert tortoise, which is a threatened species), and it is extremely important that fun-seekers drive only in designated areas so as not to disturb this wildlife and the vegetation they rely on for shelter.
This internship position has led me to a paid position with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, which will begin when my internship is over in early March. The USGS office I work out of actually created a paid position for me as well, where I'd have the opportunity to stay here and continue doing exactly what I'm doing. I thought it would be best for me to take the other position, as it differs slightly from what I'm doing and I want to gain experience in as many areas as possible before I decide on a path in which to take my future. My new position is also based out of Vegas, so I'll be sticking around here for a while.
I invite all of you to follow me on my blog, I'll try to keep it more updated! Miss everyone in Wisconsin, but not the weather!
