GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – After an impressive start to her senior campaign, Green Bay volleyball’s Monica Anderson (Cottage Grove, Wis.) has been named the Horizon League’s Scholar-Athlete of the Month for August and September of 2013. The award recognizes outstanding achievements both in competition and in the classroom.

“I couldn’t think of a person more deserving of this honor,” Green Bay head coach Michaela Franklin said. “Monica has developed into a phenomenal person, student and athlete. We are proud to have her in our program.”

Anderson posted 101 kills in the month of September, averaging 3.26 per set while hitting a solid .265. She had double-digit kill totals in six of the team’s 10 matches, including a 21-kill effort in a comeback win over Oakland on Sept. 28. Anderson was also named to the Butler Classic All-Tournament Team on Sept. 21 after registering 34 kills and hitting .405 in the three matches in Indianapolis.

The senior currently ranks second among all Horizon League players in kills per set (3.18), trailing only her teammate Shannon Hurley (Connellsville, Pa.) (3.19). Anderson has 140 kills on the year and posted five straight matches in double-figures from Sept. 21-Oct. 5. She recently tied her career high with 22 kills on Oct. 4 in a tough, five-set loss at Valparaiso.

In the classroom, Anderson boasts a 3.905 cumulative grade-point average and helped the Phoenix earn a 3.54 team GPA last spring. She was named to the Horizon League’s Academic Honor Roll both semesters of the 2012-13 school year.

Anderson becomes the second Green Bay volleyball player to win the award, as former Phoenix standout Betty Slinger was the Horizon League’s first female Scholar-Athlete of the Month in September of 2007.

Anderson and the Phoenix head to DePaul on Tuesday night for their final non-conference match of 2013 before returning to Horizon League action against Youngstown State and Cleveland State this weekend at the Kress Center.
