Green Bay Scores Twice in Rain-Shortened Scrimmage
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay women’s soccer team scored two goals on Monday afternoon against Olivet Nazarene before the scrimmage was called early due to inclement weather at Santaga Stadium. The Phoenix led 2-0 at the half, and after two minutes of play into the second half the match was called because of lightning.
Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) scored the first goal of the evening after breaking through the Olivet Nazarene defense and putting one past the keeper. Hartmann would play a part later in the half after tallying an assist on the second goal of the match.
"We saw a lot of positive elements to our game in the first half that we can continue to build on and execute throughout the regular season," Burke said.
Hartmann fed the ball to Emily Friedl (Kenosha, Wis.), who then worked through the visitors’ backline and patiently knocked one in after the ball deflected off the side of an Olivet defender.
The Phoenix defense looked tight and compact throughout the first half, which was also highlighted by a few Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo.) saves. Strong midfield play also propelled the Phoenix a 2-0 shutout performance.
"A great standard has been set by this team and we are excited to begin our non-conference shedule at home this weekend," Burke said.
The squad can now turn its focus to the 2014 season-opener, which will take place this Friday (Aug. 22) at home against IUPUI. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
