DAYTON, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team finally got its Horizon League season underway on Sunday, splitting a pair of games at Wright State.

The Phoenix improved to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the Horizon League after dropping game one, 5-3, before rebounding with a 9-4 win in game two. Wright State moved to 6-19 overall and 3-1 in conference action.

Green Bay returns to action tomorrow, playing a doubleheader at IUPUI starting at 1 p.m.

Game 1 – Green Bay 3, Wright State 5
Wright State rallied from a 3-2 deficit with a big three-run sixth inning as it took game one of the weekend series, 5-3.

The host Raiders got the scoring started in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a bases-loaded error by the Green Bay defense that allowed one run to score.

The Phoenix got the run back in the top half of the second to knot the score at 1-1. With one out, junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) doubled to center, freshman Allie Taylor (Waunakee, Wis.) singled to right and one out later sophomore Kelli Hutchison (Trevor, Wis.) delivered an RBI single to right field.

Green Bay took the lead in the top of the third with two runs to go ahead, 3-1. Again with one out, sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) singled to third before senior Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) reached on a Wright State error. Sophomore Briana Cavin (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) entered the game as a pinch runner for Shannon Butts with sister Stacey at the plate, and Stacey delivered the go-ahead runs with a two-RBI triple to center.

The Raiders got one run in the home half of the third to cut the deficit to one run (3-2), but didn’t take the lead until the bottom of the sixth inning with a big three-run rally to go up, 5-3. Loading the bases with one out, Wright State strung together back-to-back-to-back RBI performances from Reagan Stofcheck, Libby Pfeffer and Alexis Mayle to push the Raiders ahead.

Green Bay attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh but left two runners stranded as it fell, 5-3.

Stacey Butts drove in two of Green Bay’s three runs on the day, finishing 1-for-3. Michalkiewicz was the lone Phoenix with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Ashley Nannemann (3-2) took the loss after 5.1 innings of work, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

Wright State’s Krystian DeWitt (3-7) picked up the win in the complete-game effort, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Game Two – Green Bay 9, Wright State 4
The Phoenix rebounded with an offensive assault in game two as it ran away with a 9-4 win to split the day’s action.

Green Bay wasted no time denting the scoreboard, tacking on two runs in the top of the first. Junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) led off the game with a walk, advanced to second on a Baker sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a passed ball before coming home on a sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) single to left. Three batters later Michalkiewicz scored as junior Miranda Spangberg (Wausau, Wis.) singled through the middle to give the Phoenix a 2-0 lead.

The Raiders got one of those runs back in the home half of the inning, and each team added a run in the third inning to keep the Phoenix ahead, 3-2, heading into the fourth. Spangberg again provided the offense for the Phoenix with an RBI single through the right side in the third.

Green Bay tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth to put its lead at 6-2. With one out and runners on first and second, sophomore Ashley Baker (Green Bay, Wis.) hit a deep single to left center, allowing freshman Katelyn Huemmer (Sun Prairie, Wis.) to score from second. Michalkiewicz and senior Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) then drilled back-to-back RBI singles to drive in the final two runs of the inning.

Wright State kept it interesting with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within two runs, 6-4, but Green Bay put the game away in the top of the sixth with three more runs to go ahead, 9-4. Mohrfeld led off the inning with her first home run of the season and Spangberg continued her hot hitting late in the inning, delivering a bases loaded two-RBI double to center field for the final 9-4 margin.

Spangberg finished 3-for-4 in the contest with four RBI, while Michalkiewicz was 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

Sophomore Briana Cavin (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) earned the win in 4.2 innings of work, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Heather Sanderson (Rapid River, Mich.) threw the final 2.1 innings, holding the Raiders hitless while striking out four.
