Softball Takes Pair of Saturday Games at USF Tournament
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Green Bay softball team kept its winning streak alive as it picked up two more wins at the USF Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament on Saturday evening.
Green Bay's streak now stands at six consecutive victories, while it improved to 7-1 on the season overall with a 3-1 win over Bryant and a 3-2 triumph over Quinnipiac.
Game 1 Green Bay 3, Quinnipiac 2
Green Bay took the lead in the bottom of the first inning and held off a Quinnipiac threat in the top of the seventh to take the 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) started the game with a double to center field and advanced to third on a bunt single by freshman Katelyn Huemmer (Sun Prairie, Wis.). Sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) then stepped to the plate and hit an RBI groundout to the first baseman, but it was enough to allow Reinke to score for the first run of the game.
Green Bay added another run in the fourth with a bases-loaded walk to sophomore Kelli Hutchinson (Trevor, Wis.) for a 2-0 lead, but Quinnipiac cut the advantage in half with a run in the top of the fifth.
However, the Phoenix got that run back in the home half of the inning as Huemmer led off with a walk and advanced to third on two consecutive groundouts before crossing home on a senior Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) single to center field to go up, 3-2.
The Bobcats threatened with a run in the top of the seventh, but senior Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) got Quinnipiac to hit into a bases-loaded double play to end the game.
Reinke was the lone Phoenix with a multi-hit showing, going 2-for-4 with one run scored. Lauren Danner earned the win in 4.0 innings of work, holding the Bobcats scoreless while scattering four hits with three strikeouts. Freshman Hailey McDermott (Bark River, Mich.) threw one innning of relief, while Nannemann picked up her first save of the season after two innings of work.
Game 2 Green Bay 3, Bryant 1
Green Bay took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning and held on the rest of the way as it topped Bryant, 3-1.
The Phoenix dented the scoring column in the bottom of the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Junior Tia Collins (Orfordville, Wis.) delivered an RBI single to right field with runners on first and second before sophomore Ashley Baker (Green Bay, Wis.) tacked on the other with an RBI single to center.
Bryant got a lone run in the top of the third, but Green Bay added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a bases-loaded infield single from Baker for the final 3-1 margin.
Baker finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Collins went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Sophomore Briana Cavin (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) got her second win of the season, throwing a complete game with eight hits, one earned run, a walk and a strikeout.
