BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Wrapping up action at the Western Kentucky Hilltopper Classic on Saturday, the Green Bay softball team picked up a pair of wins, topping Indiana State 4-2 before going on to beat Northern Iowa, 3-1.

The two wins moved Green Bay’s record to 3-1 in the first weekend of competition.

Green Bay was slated to play Indiana State on Sunday morning, but the game has been cancelled due to inclement weather forcasted for Bowling Green.

Game One: Green Bay 4, Indiana State 2
The Phoenix rallied from a 2-0 deficit to put up two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings as it went on to defeat Indiana State, 4-2, on Saturday morning.

The Sycamores struck first in the bottom of the second inning denting the scoreboard with two runs on two hits. With two runners in scoring position Alexa Cavin hit an RBI groundout to second before Kelsey Montgomery singled through the left side to drive in another run.

Green Bay’s runs in the fourth came on RBI hits by sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) and senior Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.). Junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) led off the inning with a single to third and advanced to second on a Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) groundout.  Michalkiewiz then stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI triple through the left side to bring Mohrfeld home. After a Green Bay groundout, Shannon Butts singled through the right side, allowing Michalkiewicz to cross home plate and tie the game, 2-2.

The Phoenix went ahead in the top of the fifth with two runs on three hits. With two outs on the scoreboard, sophomore Kelli Hutchinson (Trevor, Wis.) kept Green Bay alive with a double down the left field line. Mohrfeld tripled to left field to drive in Hutchinson before Reinke laid down a suicide squeeze bunt, scoring Mohrfield to put the Phoenix ahead for good, 4-2.

Sophomore Briana Cavin (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) picked up her first win of the season, scattering four hits over five innings while allowing two earned runs with a walk. Freshman Heather Sanderson (Rapid River, Mich.) earned her first save, throwing the final two innings with a hit, strikeout and three walks.

Four different Phoenix drove in runs, with Mohrfeld and Reinke both finishing 2-for-4, Michalkiewicz 1-for-4 and Shannon Butts 2-for-3.

Taylor Lockwood took the loss for Indiana State, throwing the middle two innings and allowing the go-ahead runs. Rylee Holland was the lone Sycamore with a multi-hit showing, going 2-for-4.

Game Two: Green Bay 3, Northern Iowa 1
Green Bay completed the day’s sweep with a 3-1 win over Northern Iowa on Saturday afternoon at the Hilltopper Classic.

The hot bat of Michalkiewicz got the Phoenix on the scoreboard first as she drilled her first home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth to put Green Bay up, 1-0.

Northern Iowa put a run of its own on the board in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly by Gina Brown, but the Phoenix responded in the home half of the inning to go up, 3-1. With two runners in scoring position, junior Tia Collins (Orfordville, Wis.) singled to center field, brining in both of the runners.

Senior Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) allowed one hit with one out in the top of the seventh before setting down her next two batters faced to pick up her first complete game and win of the season. She finished the game scattering three hits while not allowing the Panthers to put a hit on the scoreboard until the top of the fifth. Her one run allowed was unearned, and she also struck out four with three walks.

Collins finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Michalkiewicz was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

UNI’s Ashley Fisher took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Sunday’s game against Indiana State has been canceled due to the threat of inclement weather in Bowling Green. The Phoenix will return to action in two weeks at the University of South Florida Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament, taking place March 14-16.
