Iwen Wins as Green Bay Falls 6-1 to Youngstown State

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) –
Sophomore Samantha Iwen (De Pere, Wis.) picked up a win at No. 5 singles, but the Green Bay (1-18, 1-3 Horizon League) women’s tennis team was unable to overcome a tough Youngstown State (12-7, 3-0 Horizon League) squad on Saturday evening as the Phoenix fell to the Penguins 6-1 at Western Racquet and Fitness.

Iwen earned a hard-fought, straight-set victory at No. 5 over Carolyn Jesko, taking down the YSU junior 6-4, 6-4. The Phoenix hung tough in a number of other singles contests, as freshman Stephanie Londre (Burlington, Wis.) fell 6-3, 7-6 (6) to Margarita Sadovnikova at No. 2, and senior Rebecca Nelson (Brookfield, Wis.) dropped a close 7-5 decision in the opening set to Lauren Hankle at No. 4 before falling 6-0 in the second. In the end, YSU closed out five of the six singles contests in straight sets.

The Penguins started the match hot, winning two of the three doubles matches in convincing fashion to secure the doubles point. YSU’s Tijana Raicevic and Annina Brendel defeated Green Bay’s freshman duo of Londre and Rachael Menos (Appleton, Wis.) 8-0 at No. 3, and Marta Burak and Sadovnikova knocked off Nelson and Amanda Timm (Milwaukee, Wis.) 8-1 at the top spot. Iwen and Maria Anderson (Marshfield, Wis.) put up a strong fight at No. 2, but ultimately fell 8-4 to Paula de Man and Hankle.

Green Bay continues its three-match home stretch on Sunday, playing host to Cleveland State at 2 p.m. at Western Racquet and Fitness.
