GREEN BAY, Wis. GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay men’s tennis sophomore Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) was recognized on Monday as the Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for April. The award is voted on by faculty athletic representatives from the league’s member institutions.
Tenzer, a business administration major who maintains an impressive 3.80 grade-point average, was named Horizon League Player of the Year on April 26, becoming the school’s first Player of the Year winner since 2006 (Tim Prudlow). The sophomore went 5-1 in singles play in the month of April and finished the 2013 season with a 16-4 singles record and a 15-7 doubles record. Tenzer also achieved a perfect 6-0 record against conference opponents during the regular season at No. 1 singles.
Tenzer helped lead the Phoenix (17-7, 6-0 HL) to five straight wins to start the month before Green Bay dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to rival Cleveland State in the Horizon League title match on April 28. Green Bay’s unbeaten conference slate (6-0) led to the program’s first regular season title in school history.
In the classroom, Tenzer helped the men’s tennis squad turn in a department-best 3.70 team GPA during the fall, leading Green Bay Athletics to its 26th-straight semester above a 3.0. Paced by men’s tennis, the department’s 3.24 combined GPA marked its highest fall average in school history.
