Phoenix Splits Doubleheader Against Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (21-22, 7-13 HL) softball team took a break from Horizon League play with a non-conference doubleheader against in-state rival Wisconsin (27-22, 6-10 Big Ten) Wednesday afternoon in Madison. The Phoenix scored a combined five runs to split with the Badgers, winning 4-2 before losing 5-1.
Game 1 - Green Bay 4 Wisconsin 2 - The Badgers scored first in the bottom of the opening inning with an RBI single to the pitcher and one out on the board. Green Bay's defense held as Wisconsin stranded three runners on base before its offense went to work in the top of the third inning.
With two outs in the third, Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) doubled to right center field before Sara Junion (Egg Harbor, Wis.) singled up the middle, advanced to second on the throw, scoring Omahen and knotting the game 1-1 at the end of three.
Wisconsin regained the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when the Badgers hit an RBI double to right field with two outs.
The Phoenix secured the 4-2 win scoring three runs off two hits and two errors in the top of the sixth. Danielle Peerenboom (Kimberly, Wis.) led off the Phoenix with a single to shortstop. Katie Cooney (East Moline, Ill.) reached on a fielder's choice before Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) reached on an error by the shortstop. Peerenboom scored the unearned run for Green Bay, tying the contest 2-2 before Jessica Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) hit an RBI single scoring Haley Andrews (Kirkland, Wash.) who was pinch running for Cooney. With two outs, Amanda Pozolinski (Appleton, Wis.) reached on a fielder's choice scoring Butts for the 4-2 final.
Cooney pitched her 11th complete game of the season striking out five batters while improving to 10-10 on the season. Green Bay's four runs came off six hits while Omahen hit the lone double for the Phoenix in its win.
Game 2 - Green Bay 1 Wisconsin 5 - The Phoenix kept its momentum going in the final game of the doubleheader after jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the first. With one out, Junion doubled to left field before Peerenboom tripled to right field, scoring Junion. Wisconsin struck out Green Bay's final two batters of the contest stranding one Phoenix runner on base.
Wisconsin tied the contest 1-1 in the bottom of the second with an RBI single bunt. The Badgers added two runs off three hits and one error in the bottom of the third before tacking on its final two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Green Bay had four hits while stranding seven runners on base in the 5-1 loss.
The Phoenix will wrap up regular season play as it travels to Ohio Saturday, May 7 for a three-game series against Youngstown State beginning at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader. The final game of the series will be played Sunday, May 8 at 12 p.m.
