Early Lead Not Enough for Phoenix at Loyola
CHICAGO, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (15-18, 2-10 HL) softball team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in its three-game series finale against Loyola (19-18, 9-5 HL) Thursday, April 21 at Loyola Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. before falling 4-2 to the Ramblers.
With runners on second and third and one out in the first inning, Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) grounded out to second, scoring Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) to put the Phoenix on the board 1-0. Freshman Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) followed up with an RBI single to right field, scoring Sara Junion (Egg Harbor, Wis.) and giving Green Bay the 2-0 lead.
Loyola cut Green Bay's lead in half in the bottom of the first with an RBI single before taking the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI double. The Ramblers sealed the win in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off homerun to left field.
The Phoenix scored two runs off six hits as Katie Cooney (East Moline, Ill.) went the distance for Green Bay from the mound striking out six batters.
Due to the recent snowfall and late spring thaw, Green Bay's softball games against Detroit scheduled for Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24 have been moved to Alverno College in Milwaukee.
Saturday's doubleheader will begin at its originally scheduled time of 1 p.m. followed by the final game of the series on Sunday at 11 a.m. For directions to Alverno Athletic Fields, click here.
Green Bay is scheduled to host UIC in a doubleheader Wednesday, April 27 beginning at 2 p.m. before wrapping up the series Thursday, April 28 at 12 p.m. at Ben Garot Field.
