GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team will kick off a seven-game road trip this Wednesday as it travels to in-state rival Wisconsin for a doubleheader slated to start at 3 p.m.
Both games of the doubleheader will be broadcast live nationally on the Big Ten Network (BTN).
Wednesday’s games mark the beginning of a seven-game road trip for the Phoenix that includes stops at Wisconsin, Cleveland State and Detroit. They will be the final road contests of the regular season for Green Bay, which will then close the season with home series against UIC and Valparaiso. Wednesday’s game is also the final non-conference series for the Phoenix in 2014.
Wisconsin leads the all-time series, 27-10-1. Last season the Badgers and Phoenix split a doubleheader at Goodman Diamond in Madison, with Green Bay taking game one, 2-1, before the Badgers responded to win game two in another close contest, 4-3.
Green Bay owns an overall record of 16-7 this season, most recently sweeping a weekday doubleheader of in-state opponent UW-Parkside. The Phoenix did not play this previous weekend, cancelling its Horizon League series against Oakland due to inclement weather.
Five Phoenix are hitting over .300 for the season, led by sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) who is hitting a team-best .378 with 28 hits, five doubles, three triples and three home runs with 25 RBI. Senior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) has a team-best eight doubles and is hitting .368, while junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) leads the team with 22 runs scored while also hitting .368.
In the circle, the Phoenix staff has posted an impressive 2.29 ERA. Senior Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) is 5-4 in 12 appearances with nine starts, posting a 1.87 ERA in 60.0 innings of work. Junior Lauren Danner (Kaukauna, Wis.) has a team-leading 0.65 ERA in 21.2 innings while freshman Heather Sanderson (Rapid River, Mich.) leads the team with 39 strikeouts.
Wisconsin is 22-15 this season and in the midst of a five-game winning streak after sweeping North Dakota in a non-conference weekday doubleheader and Big Ten opponent Illinois last weekend. Wednesday’s doubleheader wraps up a seven-game homestand for Wisconsin, where they are 6-2 this season.
Senior Mary Massei has started all 37 games and leads the team hitting .400 with 46 hits, including 20 for extra bases, while senior Michelle Mueller has a team-best 41 RBI. In the circle, senior Cassandra Darrah has appeared in 23 games with 22 starts, posting a 2.66 ERA, 98 strikeouts and 19 complete games
