Michalkiewicz Tabbed Horizon League Batter of the Week

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – With the first weekend of competition in the books for the Green Bay softball team, sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) was recognized for her efforts on the diamond as she was named the Horizon League Batter of the Week.
It is the second career player of the week honor for Michalkiewicz.
Helping the Phoenix to a 3-1 record at the Western Kentucky Hilltopper Classic over the weekend, Michalkiewicz started all four contest while hitting .429 (6-14) with a double, three triples and a home run, driving in seven runs. She also finished with a .583 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage with four of her six hits coming as extra-base opportunities.
In the season opener against host Western Kentucky, Michalkiewicz had a double, triple and five RBI while going 2-for-4 at the plate to give the Phoenix a 6-5 victory. With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, she delivered a two-run double to left center to tie the game at 2-2. She again tied the game in the top of the seventh in another bases loaded situation, this time delivering a clearing triple to center that drew the score even at 5-5. She then went on to score the winning run as she crossed home plate on an Allie Taylor (Waunakee, Wis.) single later in the inning for the final 6-5 margin.
Against Indiana State on Saturday, Michalkiewicz had an RBI triple in the top of the fourth before finishing the weekend with a 2-for-3 showing against Northern Iowa, including hitting her first home run of the season on a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth.
Green Bay will now take a week off before returning to action at the USF Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament, opening against Yale on Friday, March 14 at 9:30 a.m.
