CLEVELAND, Ohio. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) –
Acting as the home team in a make-up doubleheader at Cleveland State, the Green Bay softball team (12-22, 5-9 HL) split with the Vikings after a 7-3 victory in game two. The two-game stint was played in place of a postponed three-game home series originally slated to be played in Green Bay earlier this month.

Game 1: Cleveland State 9, Green Bay 1 (Five Innings)

With the help of a six-run second inning, Cleveland State built an insurmountable lead en route to a shortened 9-1 victory. In the inning, the Vikings’ Dara Toman belted a three-run homer, the 53rd of her career. The longball made her the Horizon League’s all-time home run leader.

The Phoenix registered its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single from freshman Kelli Hutchinson (Milwaukee, Wis.). The hit scored fellow Brew City native junior Miranda Reinke, cutting the deficit to 6-1.

It would be as close as the Phoenix would get, however, as Cleveland State tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth for a 9-1 win.

Sophomore Lauren Danner (Kaukauna, Wis.) took the loss (1-4) in 1 2/3 innings of work with eight hits, six earned runs and a strikeout. Freshman Briana Cavin (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief with three hits, three earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts.

Hutchinson finished 1-for-1 with an RBI while Reinke went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Junior Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) was the only other player to record a hit in the game with a 1-for-3 effort.

Game 2: Green Bay 7, Cleveland State 3

The Phoenix rebounded with a 7-3 win in game two with the help of a six-run second inning of its own and a dominating performance on the mound from senior Allison Goecks (Beloit, Wis.). The senior standout pitched a complete game while allowing just four hits and three earned runs. More impressively, she struck out 11 batters while walking just one.

With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Green Bay took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Stacey Butts. Freshman Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) followed her with a two-RBI single and eventually made it to third after two throwing errors. Reinke closed out the inning with a two-run homer, giving Green Bay a 6-0 edge.

The Vikings led off the top of the fourth with a solo shot from Toman, but Green Bay replied with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth when Michlkiewicz reached home on a throwing error following a double.

Cleveland State cut the score to 7-3 with a two-run homer to center in the top of the sixth, but it would be the last time either team crossed the plate.

Michalkiewicz continued her impressive freshman campaign with a 3-for-4 effort, including two RBI and two runs. Reinke finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, while six other players recorded a hit in the winning effort.

The Phoenix will return to action this weekend with a three-game series at Loyola.
