Green Bay Wins Doubleheader at Detroit

Reinke went 3-for-3 from behind the plate with two RBIs and four runs in Green Bay's 11-2 win over Detroit

DETROIT, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay softball (12-12, 2-3 HL) team won both games in its double header Horizon League battle against Detroit (7-26, 0-8 HL) Friday, April 6. The Phoenix outscored the Titans by a combined total, 14-4, snapping a three-game losing streak.

GAME 1 - GREEN BAY 11, DETROIT 2 - Sophomore Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) led off the second inning with a solo homerun to right center field, giving Green Bay the 1-0 advantage. The homer was Reinke's first of the season and second of her young career. Detroit tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double.

The Phoenix kept the bats rolling in the top of the third when Reinke added an RBI double to left field, giving Green Bay the 2-1 lead. Junior Jessica Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) added a two-run RBI single, scoring Reinke and Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) for the 4-1 cushion.

Detroit cut Green Bay's lead in half (4-2) in the bottom of the third before the Phoenix added two more runs in the top of the fifth with an unearned run and sacrifice fly, boosting its lead to 6-2.

With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Green Bay scored five runs to seal the 11-2 win. Reinke hit a single to left field before Amanda Pozolinski (Appleton, Wis.) hit an RBI double to left center. Hrncar added a single while Cassie Scheel (Hartland, Wis.) and Hailey Mohrfeld (Menominee Falls, Wis.) both reached base on a fielder's choice. Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) contributed an RBI single to center field before Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) closed the scoring with a two-run RBI single. Green Bay scored five runs on five hits while stranding two runners on base in the final inning of play.

Reinke led the Phoenix going 3-for-3 from behind the plate, with two RBIs while scoring four runs while Pozolinski went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Sophomore pitcher Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) went the distance for the Phoenix from the mound, striking out two batters while allowing two runs.

GAME 2 - GREEN BAY 3, DETROIT 2 - The Titans got on the board first in the opening inning with an unearned run for the 1-0 lead.

With two outs and Pozolinski on second  base, Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) hit an RBI double to knot the game 1-1 in the second inning of play. Green Bay later took the 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth with two outs when Newtols hit her first home run of the season.

The Phoenix boosted its lead to 3-1 with one out and one runner on base in the fifth inning when Reinke hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Shannon Butts.

Detroit came within one run in the bottom of the fifth following a Phoenix error before Green Bay's defense tagged a runner out at home plate. Green Bay's defense held in the final two innings as its offense scored three runs on nine hits in the game.

Nannemann finished her second consecutive complete game from the mound, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out two batters.

Green Bay will wrap up its three-game series against the Titans Saturday, April 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Buysse Ballpark in Detroit.
