Green Bay Opens Horizon League Play at Valpo

Green Bay will play its final game of its Horizon League series opener Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

VALPARAISO, Ind. ( - The Green Bay softball (10-11, 0-2 HL) team opened Horizon League play on the road at Valparaiso with a pair of shut out losses Saturday at VU Softball Field in Valparaiso, Ind. Green Bay combined for six hits in the doubleheader but the Crusaders' defense was too much for the Phoenix in its conference opener, not allowing a run.

GAME 1 - GREEN BAY 0, VALPARAISO 8 (6 INN) - After scoring its first run in the bottom of the opening inning, Valparaiso added five runs in the bottom of the third to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. The Crusaders' defense shut out the Phoenix while adding another run in the fourth before sealing the win with a home run in the sixth inning.

Green Bay's two hits in the game came from Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) who had a single in the second inning while Jessica Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) singled up the middle in the fifth. The Phoenix stranded four runners on base, halting its five-game winning streak.

GAME 2 - GREEN BAY 0, VALPARAISO 17 (5 INN) - Green Bay opened the second game with two hits in the first inning of play, one single each from Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) and her sister Stacey. The Phoenix was able to load the bases but unable to score on its two hits.

After a scoreless two-and-a-half innings of play, Valpo scored five runs in the bottom of the third, including a two-run homer with two outs.

Sophomore Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) had Green Bay's lone hit in the fourth inning with a single up the middle as the Phoenix stranded two runners on base in the inning.

The Crusaders put the game out of reach in the bottom of the frame by scoring 12 runs before Green Bay's final hit of the game came in the top of the fifth off a single from Cassie Scheel (Hartland, Wis.).

Green Bay finished the game with four hits and three errors while Valpo scored 17 runs on 18 hits.

The three-game series will conclude Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Valparaiso University Softball Field.
