TAMPA, Fla. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Phoenix concluded its spring break trip to Florida on Wednesday as it was wept by Iona in Tampa.

Green Bay dropped the first game, 11-4, before losing a close 5-3 contest in the second game. The Phoenix finished the week-long trip to Florida 7-3 and now owns an overall record of 10-4.

The Phoenix will have the weekend off after its Horizon League opener at Detroit was cancelled due to unplayable field conditions. It will now open its conference slate on March 29-30 at Wright State.

Game 1 Green Bay 4, Iona 11
The Phoenix owned an early 3-2 lead heading into the third inning, but Iona put up a combined nine runs over the next five innings to take game one of the doubleheader, 11-4.

Green Bay struck in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. With runners on first and second, sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) hit an RBI single to center to drive in the lone run of the inning.

Iona grabbed the lead in the home half of the inning with two runs to lead, 2-1, but the Phoenix responded in the top of the second with two more runs to go up, 3-2. With the bases loaded and two out, it was again Michalkiewicz who provided the Green Bay offense with a two-RBI double to center.

Iona tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third and took the lead back for good with two runs in the fourth, a single run in the fifth and five more in the sixth as it ran past the Phoenix, 11-4.

Freshman Heather Sanderson (Rapid River, Mich.) took the loss for Green Bay, throwing four runs and allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits with two walks. Michalkiewicz finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI, while sophomore Ashley Baker (Green Bay, Wis.) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Game 2 Green Bay 3, Iona 5
The Phoenix was unable to hold on to an early 3-1 lead as the Gaels rallied with two runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings to sweep the day series, 5-3.

Green Bay took a 2-0 lead after one inning. Junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) led off with a single and senior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) walked before sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton) delivered a sacrifice fly to center that was hit deep enough to allow Mohrfeld to score from second. Senior Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) then reached on a fielder’s choice that brought in Reinke for the 2-0 lead.

Iona got a run in the top of the second, but the Phoenix took it right back in the home half to maintain a two-run lead, 3-1. Junior Miranda Spangberg (Wausau, Wis.) led off the inning with a double to right and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brinkmeier. After sophomore Kelli Hutchinson (Trevor, Wis.) was hit by a pitch and Mohrfeld walked to load the bases, all three runners advanced on a passed ball that also allowed Spangberg to cross home plate.

However, that was all the offense Green Bay could muster as Iona added two runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings as they went on to win, 5-3.

Stacey Butts went 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI, while sister Shannon was 2-for-3. Senior Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) threw a complete game, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
