Green Bay Closes Out 2017 Season at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio ( – The Green Bay softball team closed out the 2017 season on Sunday afternoon against Cleveland State, falling to the Vikings in a pair of one-run games.

Cleveland State 8, Green Bay 7

Green Bay (4-31, 3-18) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first game of the doubleheader, but the Vikings (8-44, 4-19) stormed back and scored the next five runs of the game.

The Phoenix plated one run in the top of the sixth to extend its lead to two runs, 7-5, after Abby Brinkmeier laid down a bunt that allowed Hailee Frey to touch home.

The Vikings erased the deficit and took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth after brining home three runs, leaving the Phoenix with only three outs to even the game or take a lead.

Green Bay was unable to knot the game in its final plate appearances, falling to the Vikings 8-7 to open the day.

Cleveland State 1, Green Bay 0

Green Bay outhit Cleveland State seven to four in Game Two of the doubleheader but was unable to convert any baserunners into runs in the final game of the season, falling 1-0 in a pitchers' duel to end the season.

Katie Rossmann was in the circle in the final game for Green Bay, dealing for six innings, allowing four hits and only one run.

Seniors Abby Brinkmeier, Hailee Frey and Allie Taylor took the diamond for the final time to represent the Phoenix. The trio of seniors combined were all four-year members of the Phoenix and contributed to a Horizon League Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.
