Green Bay a No. 8 Seed, Faces No. 9 Seed Purdue at Notre Dame
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay (27-5) will enter the 2017 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament as a No. 8 seed in the Lexington Region and will face No. 9-seeded Purdue (22-12) in the First Round in Notre Dame, Indiana, on Friday at 4 p.m. CT.
The contest will take place at the Purcell Pavilion on Notre Dame’s campus, with the winner facing the winner of No. 1 seed Notre Dame (30-3) and No. 16 seed Robert Morris (22-10) on Sunday. Green Bay took Notre Dame, who was ranked No. 1 in the country in both major polls at the time, down to the wire back on Nov. 17 on its home floor before falling by four 71-67.
Green Bay clinched the automatic berth with its Horizon League Championship victory over Detroit Mercy on Tuesday, Mar. 7. The Phoenix will be making its 17th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and for the eighth time in the last nine seasons.
In last year’s NCAA Tournament, the 10th-seeded Phoenix fell to No. 7 seed Tennessee 59-53 in Tempe, Arizona, in the First Round. Green Bay lost as a No. 9 seed to No. 8 seed Princeton 80-70 in College Park, Maryland, in 2015.
The Phoenix last faced Purdue back on Nov. 19, 2015, in West Lafayette. Green Bay won that game in double-overtime 81-78, upsetting the 24th-ranked Boilermakers on their home floor, avenging its loss to Purdue at home the year prior.
Ticket information will be available soon.
