VALPARAISO, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team was originally scheduled to play host to Valparaiso this week but was forced to hit the road due to poor field conditions and take on the Crusaders in Indiana. The Phoenix earned a split on the afternoon, downing Valparaiso 4-3 in the first game of the doubleheader before falling 13-2 to end the day.

Green Bay 4, Valparaiso 3

Green Bay (2-17, 1-4) never trailed in the series opener with Valparaiso, as one swing of the bat from Abby Brinkmeier put the Phoenix on top 2-0 in the first inning after the senior sent one over the right field fence and brought Hailee Frey around to score.

The Crusaders added a single run in the second inning but still entered the top of the seventh trailing the Phoenix 3-2. Green Bay was unable to keep Valparaiso off the board in the top of the inning and the Crusaders knotted the game at three-all after Moreno singled to right-center to bring Callaghan home from third base. The Phoenix closed out the inning before falling to a disadvantage to Valparaiso, needing just one run to claim its first conference victory.

Bailey Schultz opened the bottom of the seventh with a single to right-center, placing the game-winning run on base with three outs remaining in the inning. Frey advanced Schultz to secomf and Brinkmeier brought her home with a bunt single to seal Green Bay's first league victor, 4-3.

Katie Rossmann picked up her second win of the year in the outing, putting in seven innings of work and only allowing four hits while picking up one strikeout.

Valparaiso 13, Green Bay 2

After dropping a highly contested first game, Valparaiso came out firing in the second game of the day and played three runs in the first inning. In total, all 13 of the Crusaders' runs would be on the board before the Phoenix brought someone around to score.

The Phoenix was able to get its offense going in the fifth inning of play by bringing in a pair of runs, but it would prove to be too little too late as the eight-run rule took effect and Valparaiso picked up a 13-2 victory.

Green Bay returns to the diamond tomorrow afternoon to close out the series with Valparaiso at noon.
