Green Bay Outhit on Final Day of Jayhawk Invitational
LAWRENCE, Kan. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (1-13) closed out action in the Jayhawk Invitational on Sunday against UMKC and host Kansas. The Phoenix fell to the Roos, 12-7, and the Jayhawks, 14-2,
UMKC 12, Green Bay 7
After a first inning that took 50 minutes and saw a total of 10 runs cross the plate, it was clear that both teams took the diamond on Sunday morning ready to play. UMKC plated six in the top of the first off only a pair of hits but benefited from six walks.
Green Bay totaled 12 hits in the matchup with UMKC but allowed a season-high 16 to the Roos. UMKC scored a total of six runs over the final six innings of play while allowing only three, going on to defeat the Phoenix 12-7.
Kansas 14, Green Bay 2 (Five Innings)
The first frame saw the high-powered Kansas (14-9) offense open with nine runs and place the Phoenix at its largest first-inning deficit of the season.
Green Bay was held off the board until the fourth inning when Delagrange homered to left, bringing herself and Engel around to score.
The Jayhawks’ potent offense didn’t slow down for the remainder of the game and went on to defeat Green Bay for the second time in three days with a 14-2 victory at its home park.
Green Bay will now shift its focus to Horizon League play on March 31, opening its league slate at home against Wright State at 3 p.m.
