Green Bay Advances to League Tournament for First Time Since 2011
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -- The Green Bay men's soccer team has advanced to the Horizon League men's soccer tournament for the first time since the 2011 season. The team will begin tournament play on Monday in Rochester, Mich., as the fifth seed, taking on the fourth-seeded Oakland Golden Grizzlies.
"I'm very proud of what our team was able to accomplish during the regular season," head coach Jeremy Bonomo said. "With such a young team and so many new faces, it took some time for our team to really come together. Our players deserve a lot of credit. They put the work in all season and never quit. It's an exciting time for Green Bay men's soccer and the future is certainly bright."
The Phoenix won three of its last four games heading into the postseason and outscored its opponents 6-2. In addition, Green Bay has been unbeaten in five of its six most-recent league contests.
The Phoenix owns one of the best defenses in the league, allowing only six goals to conference opponents, which ranks second in the Horizon League to only top-seeded Wright State with two, a team that Green Bay defeated 1-0 on September 10th to open league play.
Green Bay has accumulated 14 points in conference action this season, the highest point total in the past four seasons. The last time the Phoenix qualified for the Horizon League tournament, it advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 win over UIC in the quarterfinals.
One of the most pivotal pieces to this year's success has been Green Bay's stellar defense, all led by goalkeeper Kyle Ihn, who ranks second in league shutouts with four. Ihn, a senior on this year's squad, owns a save percentage of .884 and a goals-against average of .59.
The Phoenix will be in search of its first Horizon League Tournament title since the 2009 season, where Green Bay defeated Butler in PK's (3-2) in the tournament championship.
