Cross Country Competes in Horizon League Championships

KENOSHA, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Phoenix men’s and women’s Cross Country teams competed in the 2016 Horizon League Championships today. The men shot themselves to seventh in the league overall and the women placed tenth.
Junior Mitchell Bilitz led the way for the men’s team, receiving First Team All-League Honors. He crossed the line with a final time of 25:56 in the 8k race, earning seventh place individually.
The other scorers on the men’s side were senior Eric Bilitiz with a time of 26:36 for 18th place, junior Erik Johnson crossing 32nd in 27:11, senior Austin Gokey finishing at 27:17 for 34th, and sophomore Sammuel Engel taking 69th place with a time of 28:41. Junior Eduardo Navarro and sophomore Jacob Fierst rounded up the men’s squad of seven with times of 28:49 and 29:47, respectively.
On the women’s side, junior Kimberly Hurst came in 18th place, finishing the 6k course with a time of 23:04. Other scorers included freshman Meta Ehlen (50th, 24:37), sophomore Alexandra Kershner (61st, 25:09), junior Erin Schmitt (66th, 25:19), and freshman Olivia Zweber (74th, 26:05). Junior Heather Plough and freshman Carolynn Claussen were the final members of the top seven Phoenix runners with final times of 26:43 and 26:55, respectively.
"It was a beautiful day on a national championship cross country course," head coach Mike Kline said. "We had some great performances, including a seventh place finish from Mitchell Bilitz that placed him on First-Team All-Horizon League. Now we are looking ahead to our biggest meet of the year, the NCAA Regional Championships in two weeks at Wisconsin's Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course."
Both teams now advance to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on November 11th.
