CLEVELAND, Ohio ( – The Green Bay softball team (19-31, 10-10 HL) opened its last series of the regular season on Friday afternoon, dropping a 9-2 decision to Cleveland State (19-28, 12-10 HL) at Viking Field.

Both teams provided the fireworks early on, as all 11 runs of the contest were scored in the second and third innings, including four home runs. After the Phoenix pushed two across in the top of the second; however, the Vikings scored nine unanswered runs, with over half coming via the long ball.

The programs will conclude its three-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN3.

After the opposing starters put up zeros in the first, freshman Brennan Engel helped Green Bay strike first by hitting a solo home run to right field, her fourth blast of the season. Following singles from Katelyn Huemmer and Jenna SmarzinskiHailee Frey lined the Phoenix's fourth hit of the inning up the middle, scoring Huemmer, to give Green Bay a 2-0 edge.

Beginning the day as one the league's top home-run hitting teams, CSU showed why moments later, as it hit three home runs off Katie Rossmann. Alyson Broschk began with a solo shot to left, before Katelind Phillips (3-run) and Erica McNew (solo) went back-to-back to cap the Vikings' five-run second.

From there, CSU turned the game over to senior hurler Susan Knight, who held Green Bay scoreless over the remaining five innings, allowing just two hits during that span. Meanwhile, the Vikings offense continued to get its hits, as it scored four more runs on five in the third to increase its lead to 9-2.

Despite a rocky second and third in the circle, the Phoenix did find some stability to end the game, as Sara Simonar was impressive in her four innings of work, allowing just two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
