Green Bay Splits Friday Afternoon Twinbill in Kentucky
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (17-29, 8-8 HL) returned to Horizon League action on Friday afternoon against Northern Kentucky (12-37, 4-15 HL), splitting a double-header at Frank Ignatius Grein Field.
The Phoenix scored eight runs in a two-inning span and held off a late-inning Norse rally for an 8-7 victory in Game 1, before scattering six hits in a Game 2 loss, 7-0. Due to inclement weather, the series finale between the two teams will be played at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday morning.
Green Bay 8, NKU 7 (Game 1)
What appears to be a pitcher's duel early on turned out to be anything but over the game's final three innings. After Green Bay's Bailey Smaney and NKU's Ashlynn Roberts cruised through the first four frames, the Phoenix finally broke through in a big way in the fifth.
The Norse got three back after a 3-run double from right fielder Zahrya McFarland made it 5-3, but once again the Phoenix put up a crooked number in the sixth, as a lead-off triple by Katelyn Huemmer was cashed in by a NKU error. Then a pair of RBI singles from Kelli Hutchinson and Acacia Tupa extended the Green Bay advantage back to five, at 8-3.
Although Smaney was unable to finish the seventh, allowing four runs, sophomore Katie Rossmann was brought on in relief, inducing a game-ending pop-out to earn her second save of 2016. With the win, the freshman Smaney improved to 10-9 on the season.
NKU 7, Green Bay 0 (Game 2)
Although Game 2 began in similar fashion, the Phoenix had no answer for the Norse's Jordan Harbacek, as the freshman threw a six-hit shutout to stymie Green Bay's hope of a sweep.
