Nordic Ski Opens Season at U.S. National Championships
HOUGHTON, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) –Green Bay Nordic skiing team took to the snow for the first time last weekend, as seven members of its squad participated in the 2016 U.S. Cross Country Championships in Houghton, Mich., on the campus of Michigan Tech.
The Phoenix was one of 20 total colleges to partake in the earlier season competition, finishing in ninth place, which combined both distance and sprint points.
“We like to take advantage of what we can learn from the field,” said head coach Steve Teclaw. “At this event, there are prior US ski team members, US team hopefuls, Olympians and college teams from all 3 regions, including international athletes. Our athletes can learn a lot from this diverse veteran field while on the race course.”
In the sprint, Marshall placed 45th, including 18th in the men’s under 23 age classification, while Nichols ended 52nd. Mucha finished 47th, good enough for 11th in the women’s under 23 group.
“Statistically we did much better than last year with four results into the top 50. Last year we had none in that category,” said Teclaw. “That is a rewarding takeaway; however, each athlete has a list of things to focus on in this week’s workouts.”
