Women's Soccer Looks to Keep Momentum in Chicago
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Enjoying a 3-1-0 start to the 2014 season, the Green Bay women’s soccer team will look to carry its momentum into Chicago this weekend for a pair of games against Chicago State and Loyola Chicago on Friday and Sunday.
The Phoenix will be playing its first road game of the season on Friday (Sept. 5) at Chicago State starting at 3:30 p.m. and will follow that game with another road contest at Loyola Chicago on Sunday (Sept. 7). Sunday’s game against Loyola will be played at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill.
ABOUT GREEN BAY
12 in 4
Green Bay has scored 12 goals to date this season in only four games, which happens to be the total number of goals scored throughout the entire 2013 season. The Phoenix have been putting up goals in bunches, scoring three goals in two games and six in another. Should the team find a way to score five goals this weekend, it will be the most goals scored since 2009 and if the team keeps its average of 3.0 goals per game for the duration of the season, it will set the school record in goals scored in a season (currently 51 in 1990).
For the second consecutive week the Phoenix had a player garner Offensive Player of the Week honors. Senior Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) picked up the honor this week after scoring two goals in a 3-1 win over Northern Iowa and adding an assist against North Dakota. Junior Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) was named POTW for the opening week of the season. This weekend will decide of GB can make it three straight.
After kicking off the season with four-straight home games, the Phoenix will now play seven of its next eight away from Santaga Stadium. Six of those games will come against teams from the state of Illinois, with five of them coming on the road (DePaul at home on Sept. 11 is lone home game) before GB begins Horizon League with back-to-back road games at Oakland and Valparaiso.
