Green Bay Invitational Kicks Off Fall Schedules for Phoenix Golf

GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – As both programs kick off new eras with first-year head coaches, the Green Bay men’s and women’s golf programs will open their 2014-15 schedules on Sunday by hosting the Green Bay Phoenix Invitational at Green Bay Country Club. The 54-hole tournament runs from Sunday-Tuesday with an 18-hole round each day.

Play on Sunday for the men’s and women’s tournaments will get underway at 1:30 p.m. The second round on Monday will begin at 8:30 a.m. while Tuesday’s final round will start at 9 a.m. All fans are welcome to come attend the tournament at beautiful Green Bay Country Club.

The men will play the 7,097-yard course as a par-72 while the women will compete on a 5,898-yard course as a par-73. Results will be available at the conclusion of each round on

On the women’s side, head coach Kelsey Frey will be making her head coaching debut after being hired to lead the program on Aug. 4. The Green Bay native was a standout player at Wisconsin and played professionally on the LPGA Futures Tour.

Frey’s team returns a core group of four juniors that has gained lots of experience the past two seasons as underclassmen. Sammi Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.) led the Phoenix in scoring average in 2013 (82.2).

The 2014 team also welcomes four freshman to the roster, including Leah Birch (Kenosha, Wis.), Emily Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.), Lauren Klubertanz (Waukesha, Wis.) and Jacqueline Staed (Green Bay, Wis.).

Tim Desormeau enters his first season as the head coach of the Green Bay men’s squad and returns an experienced team that won three events in 2013-14. DeSormeau is a veteran PGA profressional with more than 30 years of experience in the golf industry.

Senior Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) won back-to-back events last fall, including the title at the 2013 Green Bay Phoenix Invitational. Boockmeier’s performance helped the Phoenix win its home event last fall with come-from-behind victory.

Senior Joseph Collard (Marinette, Wis.) returns after leading the team in scoring average (75.5) last season, and junior Gene Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) ranked second at 75.6.
