Green Bay Cross Country Opens 2014 Season at UIC
ROMEOVILLE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s and women’s cross country teams opened up the 2014 season on Saturday morning, competing in the UIC Invitational in Romeoville, Ill. The Phoenix men and women dropped dual competitions against Milwaukee and UIC and defeated Chicago State.
Competing on a 4.08K course, junior Sarah Mauel (Green Bay, Wis.) led the Phoenix women finishing in tenth place with a time of 16:40.5. Sophomore Breanna Suess (Luxemburg, Wis.) crossed the line less than two seconds later in 11th place (16:42.1).
In her collegiate debut, freshman Rebecca Voss (Marshfield, Wis.) claimed the third spot on the team and finished in 14th place overall. Senior Kayla Hucke (Hartland, Wis.) and Heather Plough (West Allis, Wis.) rounded out the team’s top-five in 23rd and 27th, respectively.
Cousins Mitchell Bilitz and Eric Bilitz (Fond du lac, Wis.) led the Green Bay men’s squad in Saturday’s 6K race. Mitchell, a freshman making his collegiate debut, paced the Phoenix in 15th place (21:07.7). Eric, a senior, was one spot back in 16th place (21:16.1) less than 10 seconds behind Mitchell.
Senior Andrew Sorenson (Onalaska, Wis.) was the third Phoenix runner to cross the finish line in 21st place (21.33.3). Junior Dalton Woodworth (Sparta, Wis.) and Erik Johnson (Green Bay, Wis.) claimed the team’s fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
Green Bay returns to competition on Sept. 13 at the UW-Parkside Midwest Open on the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Somers, Wis.
